Background:
Veronica G. Henry is an author from Sierra Leon descent. She was born in Brooklyn, New York in March of 1972. It is considerably hard to find information about her. She writes mainly about historical fiction and dark fantasy. Her drive and motivation to become an author was because of her interest in storytelling and the storytelling of her culture aspect.
Magic inside Henry:
Her book, "The Quarter Storm" is her second most popular book following the rating scores. It is about a vodou practicer who is given magical powers following hurricane Katrina. She then has to solve a murder with these given powers to protect other vodou practicers who have been framed for the crime. The art of Vodou has been brought to the Americas from Africa and shows how Veronica uses African culture to further detail and represent her culture.
How the People Feel:
The Los Angeles Public Library says how her book really paints a picture of New Orleans and gives good insight and overview of Africans in America (M., Daryl).
Considering Stories says this about the book, "The Quarter Storm has both a terrific sense for bringing a location to life as well as giving us characters worth investing our time and empathy in." (Daniel Robichaud).
Goodreads said about her recognition by Amazon. "Her work has debuted at #1 on multiple Amazon bestseller charts, was chosen as an editors’ pick for Best African American Fantasy" (“Veronica G. Henry”).
I think this book has actually captured my interest, whereas many books do not. From all the summaries and overviews, I have research about this book and about Veronica's style, I am much interested in reading some of her books, especially this one. The inclusion of magic and murder mystery has intrigued me, and I feel like I would definitely learn some things along the way about the city of New Orleans and African culture.
.
I love that you wrote about an urban fantasy book! Urban fantasy is such a great genre, because the author gets to blend magical elements with real life experiences, like Sierra Leone did. This book sounds really interesting, and I might have to check it out from my library!
