The powerful voice of African American authors- Kailynn Beidel

The Author that I have chosen is Jesmyn Ward.

Jesmyn Ward is an American award-winning writer known for her powerful novels, stories, and memoirs that explores the different themes of family, race, poverty, and resilience in her writing.  (Encyclopedia Britannica, n.d.)

Jesmyn Ward was born and raised in DeLisle, Mississippi April 1, 1977. Many of her books were inspired by her own experiences while growing up in South America. Through-out her writing, she brings attention to the struggles and strengths of people living in different communities that are sometimes overlooked. (National Book Foundation, n.d.)

Two of Ward's most acclaimed novels, both highlighting social issues in contemporary America

One of Ward's most well-known novels is Salvage the Bones, which follows a family living in Mississippi as they prepare for hurricane Katrina. The novel explores the different challenges from poverty to family relationships during the natural disaster. (National Book Foundation, n.d.)

Another popular work is Sing, Unburied, Sing. It focuses on the themes of racism, family history, and mass incarceration within the United States. Throughout these stories, Ward helps readers like us understand the realities that a lot of people face in society. (National Book Foundation, n.d.)

Ward's memoir, Men We Reaped, is a deep person account of loss and grief. In the book, she reflects on several dead young men that are in her life and examines the social and economic conditions that have affected them futures. This work does demonstrate how personal experiences are connected to larger issues that are within society.

Jesmyn Ward's writing is so important because it gives a voice to stories that are not always represented in literature. She sometimes writes about African American families in rural South which she also highlights the challenges that the families face. The family also shows their strength, love, and determination as they are struggling with the challenges. Her work encourages readers like us to think about social issues like racial inequality, poverty, and access to opportunities. (National Book Foundation, n.d.)

The connection between literature and society is clearly seen in Ward's work. Literature allows readers to gain insight into the experiences of other people. Ward uses her writing to bring awareness and understanding to important social issues. Her novels show different historical events, economic conditions, and social inequalities can affect many individuals and families. By sharing some of these stories, she helps readers develop empathy and greater understanding of the different perspectives. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, n.d.)

Ward explained in an interview with The Paris Review, "Stories are always being told. We are all storytellers." This quote from the interview reflects Ward's belief in the power of being a storyteller and having the ability to help people understand the experiences of others. (The Paris Review, 2018)

In my conclusion, Jesmyn Ward is a powerful voice in modern literature. Throughout her novels and memoirs, she explores meaningful themes such as family, race, poverty, and resilience. Ward's writing not only tells compelling stories, but she also tells us readers to be encourage on reflecting on important issues in our society. For these reasons, Jesmyn Ward continues to be a very influential author whose work has made a lasting impact on contemporary literature. (National Book Foundation, n.d.)

  1. Jesmyn Ward seems like a great author. She seems to gravitate towards topics that aren't regularly covered in general media, and I would be interested to read her work. I would especially like to read her book set during hurricane Katrina.

  2. I admire how this author is shedding light on certain topics and dynamics that should be seen more in writing! I also admire how she writes in a way that allows readers to connect to the book but also to open their eyes to different perspectives. I am excited to read some of her books!
